Retired Master Sgt. Norvin “Gene” Nessel, 65, of Henrietta, passed away January 23, 2015.
Viewing will be held at Davis Funeral Home in Henrietta, Texas on Monday, Jan. 26 from 6-8 p.m., followed by a graveside service at Hope Cemetery on Thursday, Jan. 29 at 2 p.m.
Mr. Nessel was born May 9, 1949 in Midland to the Norvin John and Jewell Faye Nessel. He graduated from Vanoss High School in Oklahoma in 1967. He also graduated from Wayland Baptist University. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years, retiring as a Master Sgt. in November 1987. From there, he went to work for Raytheon at Sheppard Air Force Base from 1988 to 1996. In 1996, Gene began working as a welding instructor at Vernon College until he retired in August 2013, returning as an adjunct instructor in 2014. He enjoyed golf, John Wayne movies and woodworking. He loved sports and loved coaching his children. One of his favorite enjoyments in life was spending his free time with his grand kids. He married Debra (Debby) Kelly on July 2, 1998 in Wichita Falls.
He is preceded in death by his father, Norvin John Nessel; his wife, Marilyn Sue Nessel; and one granddaughter, Samantha Waller.
Survivors include his wife, Debby of Henrietta; mother, Jewell of Levelland; his mother-in-law Jeanie of Henrietta; three children, a daughter, Alena “Lee” and the late Ray Russell of Henrietta; two sons, Greg Nessel and wife Lori of Wichita, Kan., and Jason Nessel and wife Jennifer of Burkburnett; two stepdaughters, Cassandra “Cassie” Sherwood of Henrietta, and Jennifer Earhart of Denton; and a stepson, Christopher “Chris” Kelly of Wichita Falls. a sister, Francess McCutchen and husband Jimmy of Levelland; two brothers, Ken Nessel and wife Sherry, and Bob Nessel, all of Stratford, Okla.; 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
