Nell Schaffner of Byers


Erdie Glynelle “Nell” Schaffner, 83, of Byers, passed away Saturday, December 6.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9 at the First Baptist Church of Byers with Matthew Schaffner and Phil Smith officiating.

Mrs. Schaffner was born October 7, 1931 to Homer and Rose Dorman. She came to Clay County when her parents became teachers at the one-room Riverland School. She graduated in 1948 from Henrietta High School as valedictorian. She and Reuben Schaffner were wed June 6, 1948 in Riverland. She was active in Wichita, Archer and Clay Baptist Association organizations and activities and in the Byers First Baptist Church, including making Christmas stockings for the Rio Grande River Ministry. She worked as a teller at the First National Bank of Byers. She was chosen to be Clay County Pioneer Duchess in 2006.

She is preceded in death by a brother, younger sister and husband.

Survivors include her children, Nelda of Shawnee Mission, Kan.; Karen of Fukuoka, Japan; Gary and wife Janet of Norman, Okla., and Marilyn Mahurin of Byers; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at Davis Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. Monday evening from 6-8.
