In what could best be described as a tale of two halves, Henrietta came away with a 33-15 win over City View, claiming third place in District 2-3A, setting up Friday’s bi-district showdown with Idalou.
Until Friday’s game, the City View offense had posted an average 464 yards per game. Henrietta limited the Mustangs to 231 yards, and claimed six sacks and two fumbles in the process.
Logan Carter claimed three sacks in the game, adding to his total nine solo and three assisted tackles in the game. Hayden West, Shane Basham, Cody Fletcher, Jaylon Curtis and Bryce Schroeder also put forth big defensive efforts. West finished with a combined 7.5 tackles, Basham had 6.5 tackles, Fletcher had five and Curtis and Schroeder had three each.
Miscues got the best of Henrietta in the first half, but when the Bearcats returned to the field after halftime, it was the team that fans have grown accustomed too.
“We quit stopping ourselves… We just came together and got after it,” said West of the second half. “We had some breaks. We got an onside (kick), which was huge. We made a big stop on them on their end and put some points on the board.”
Henrietta held a seven-point lead over City View in the first quarter when Watson scored from eight yards out.
The lead didn’t last long as City View’s Ryan Karr recovered a botched two-point conversion attempt in the end zone to put the Mustangs up 8-7 just 23 seconds into the second quarter. Henrietta struck again with an 14-yard touchdown pass from Watson to Fletcher.
The Bearcat defense made a goal line stand as the last seconds ticked off the first half clock, but Karr punched into the end zone at the buzzer, 15-14. It would be City View’s last points of the night.
With 8:04 remaining in the third quarter, Watson scored from four yards out. On Henrietta’s next possession, the junior quarterback connected with Jaylon Curtis for a 57-yard touchdown, and followed in the fourth quarter with a 30 yard touchdown pass to Mason Hanson.
With a well balanced offensive effort, the Bearcats tallied 286 yards. Watson completed seven of 14 pass attempts for 140 yards, while Henrietta totaled 146 yards rushing on 36 carries. Watson connected with Curtis, Hanson and Fletcher twice each. Curtis finished with 68 yards receiving, followed by Hanson with 36 yards and Fletcher with 22 yards. West took one pass 14 yards. Watson led the ground game with 21 carries for 86 yards.
Deon’Tray Jordan took the bulk of the carries for City View, rushing 126 yards on 23 attempts. Karr completed eight of 20 pass attempts for 75 yards.
Henrietta faces Idalou at Abilene Wylie. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live online at texomabroadcasting.com.
