Pirate Bandy Mataska scored two key touchdowns Friday, leading Petrolia to a 21-18 win over Seymour in the District 7-2A opener.
After a scoreless first quarter, Dane Williams put Petrolia on the board with a five-yard touchdown run.
Mataska followed by scooping up a Seymour fumble and returning it 88 yards to the Panther end zone. Williams split the uprights on both point-after kicks, giving the Pirates a 12-0 lead at halftime.
Seymour put up six points in the third quarter, and added 12 in the fourth to take an 18-14 lead.
Petrolia answered with a 22-yard touchdown run and, with the extra-point from Williams, sealed the win.
The Petrolia defense limited Seymour’s passing game to five receptions on 23 attempts and claimed four interceptions. The Pirates forced and recovered two fumbles. The Panthers finished with 213 yards rushing on 42 carries, and 61 yards through the air.
Williams completed six of 15 pass attempts for the Pirates with two interceptions for 34 yards. Petrolia rushed for 78 yards on 34 carries. Mataska finished with 42 yards, followed by Jake Edgemon with 28 yards.
This week, Petrolia (2-4, 1-0) will host Hamlin.
