Pick 3: Petrolia dents, but can’t stop, Bells passing game

Playing a rare Saturday game, Petrolia fell to Bells, 35-20, at Denton ISD’s Collins Stadium on Sept. 13.

Bells, located east of Sherman, is led by Head Coach Scott Ponder, in his third coaching assignment since leading Petrolia to a state championship in 2002.

Bells found some success in its passing game against Petrolia, but struggled with turnovers. Ponder’s son Derrick completed 16 of 32 pass attempts for 372 yards and three touchdowns. The Petrolia defense came away with three interceptions.

Petrolia quarterback Dane Williams completed 20 of 35 pass attempts for 193 yards and no interceptions for two touchdowns Williams connected with Bandy Mataska  for a 10-yard touchdown in the second quarter, and with Jaden Lane  for a six-yard strike in the fourth quarter.

Mataska scored again in the fourth on a three-yard run.

Petrolia finished with 67 yards rushing on 18 carries. Bells had 64 yards rushing on 15 carries.

Bells took a 14-0 lead in the second quarter and scored twice more in the third and again in the fourth quarter.

Friday, Petrolia travels to Chico.
