The driver of a late-model Ford pickup died Wednesday in an early morning accident near Bellevue.

A two-vehicle accident on Hwy. 287 near the Clay-Montague county line claimed the life of one man while leaving another without injury early Wednesday morning.

The accident happened 2.7 miles east of Bellevue — roughly 500 yards inside Montague County — at about 5:21 a.m. Wednesday when a late-model Ford 1-ton truck with a gooseneck trailer driven by Michael Ray Leggett, 54, of Cypress, Texas, struck the back of a late-model Volvo semi and trailer driven by Carlton Nobles, 47, of Center, Texas.

The impact forced the cab of the pickup under the tractor-trailer, killing Leggett. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured in the collision.

Nobles told investigators that the semi was stalling and had slowed, said DPS spokesman Tony Fulton.

The tractor-trailer was hauling medical supplies from Austin to Colorado. Leggett was delivering oil field equipment.

Northbound lanes were closed for more than five hours and traffic diverted through Vashti and Bellevue. DPS Troopers, the Bowie Fire Department and Bowie Rural VFD responded to the accident.
