Petrolia quarterback Dane Williams connected with receiver Jake Edgemon twice for touchdowns in the third quarter of Friday’s season opener against Archer City, but it wouldn’t be enough to overcome a powerful Wildcat ground game, 52-14.
Down 39-0, the sophomore Williams connected with Edgemon on a 34-yard strike, and again on Petrolia’s next possession for a 45-yard touchdown. Jonathan Baker completed the Pirate’s final scoring drive with a two-point conversion run.
Petrolia finished with 33 yards rushing on 19 carries and 184 yards passing. Williams completed 15 of 30 attempts with one interception.
Archer City’s Ty Tucker and Derrik Pollock led the Wildcat offense. Tucker scored on runs of one, nine and two yards in the first, second and fourth quarters, respectively. Pollock scored on runs of 25, five and one yards in the second quarter, a 22-yard run in the third, and a 34-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Archer City rolled up 528 yards rushing on 48 carries. Quarterback Tucker completed three of 10 passes with one interception for 24 yards. Petrolia’s defense also claimed an Archer City fumble.
Next week, Petrolia plays host to the Olney Cubs. On Friday, Olney suffered a 33-0 loss to Baird.
