Prater Water Well Drilling of Bowie completes a well on the courthouse lawn Tuesday morning.
It took less than an hour and $1,800 Tuesday for drillers to find water under the courthouse lawn as Prater Water Well Drilling of Bowie completed a well expected to produce 5-6 gallons per minute.
Once a pump and pressure tank have been installed, the water supply will be plumbed to the courthouse sprinkler system. Once complete, the project is expected to cost $4,000, to be paid from the courthouse renovation fund.
The driller hit a sheet of water at a depth of 18 feet, and again at 38 feet. The well is 40 feet deep. Drilling equipment arrived at 8:15 a.m. and completed the well shortly before 9 a.m.
County commissioners approved the project during a regular meeting April 14. The well is located on the northwest corner of the courthouse, near the county war memorial.
