The eighth annual Clay County Turkey Fest gets underway next week, and with it come big changes to the Battle of the Beards, a favorite event among area hunters.

Hunters participating in the Battle of the Beards compete to harvest the largest Rio Grande turkey. Turkeys killed during Turkey Fest, April 9-12, are scored on weight, beard length and spur length. Once a youth and adult division winner is determined, the hunter with the overall highest scoring bird is declared Battle of the Beards champion.

New this year, the overall Battle of the Beards winner will earn a $1,000 cash prize made possible through a partnership with Cabela’s. The overall winner will get two tickets to the Full Strut Banquet on Saturday, April 12, where he or she will be honored.

Prizes also include a $100 Cabela’s gift card for the winners of the adult and youth categories, and a $100 gift card for the owner of the property where the overall champion bird was harvested.

To up the ante, Turkey Fest organizers have expanded the area where Battle of the Beards participants can hunt from Clay and surrounding counties to all of Texas and Oklahoma.

Entry fee is $25 for adults and $15 for youth hunters. Weigh-ins will be held at noon and 7 p.m. Thursday, April 10 and Friday, April 11, and at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 12.
