Dustin Hanusch hit two home runs, but it wasn’t enough to carry Petrolia to a win on Friday, as the Pirates Varsity fell to Chico 10-9 at Petrolia in seven innings.
Tyler Melton got the win for Chico despite allowing nine runs over seven innings. He struck out six, walked seven and surrendered 12 hits.
Chico’s Jaston McBee, Tyler, Jerico McGuire and Marshal Anderle combined for nine hits and two RBIs.
Hanusch was charged with the loss. He lasted four innings, walked six, struck out five and allowed two runs.
Chico jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Melton singled to ignite Chico’s offense. McGuire singled, plating two. The scoreboard lit up again for Chico when McGuire and Anderle scored on a two-run single by Austin Collins.
Chico brought home one run in the fifth inning, and matched that run total in the sixth. In the fifth, Chico scored on a passed ball, plating Jaston.
The Pirates survived Chico’s surge and put up one run of their own in the fourth. Zac Baker scored on a fielder’s choice from Jacob Dove to kick off a five-run rally. Bandy Mataska and Dove took advantage of a Chico error to cross home plate, followed by Hanusch’s second home run of the day, a fly to left field.
Hanusch also homered in the bottom of the first inning, scoring Brandon Shipley.
In the fifth, Petrolia scored on an RBI double by Baker.
Chico went up for good in the sixth, scoring one run on.
