Sixth inning runs lead to Pirate win over Poolville


With an an eight-run explosion in the sixth inning, Petrolia baseball defeated Poolville on the road Tuesday night for the Pirates first win in district play.

PHS-BASEBALLIt was a good day at the plate for Pirate Bandy Mataska. Bandy went 3 for 5, driving in one run and scoring three. He singled in the first, fourth and sixth innings.

Mataska got the win for Petrolia, pitching three shutout innings. He struck out two, walked three and surrendered five hits.

Dustin Hanusch relieved Mataska, allowing just two hits, no earned runs, walked one and struck out six during his three innings of work.

Cody Royer took the loss for Poolville, giving up six runs in five innings. He walked one and struck out eight.

Petrolia’s Jacob Dove and Rance Reeves finished with two RBIs each.

The lead stayed with the Petrolia Pirates Varsity after the first, when they scored three runs on two errors and a fielder’s choice.

The Petrolia Pirates Varsity built upon their lead with three runs in the fourth. Mataska kicked things off with a single, plating Josh Merito.

The Pirates host Chico Friday. Gametime is set for 5 p.m.
