John and Jan Auchmoody of Byers are without a home following a Wednesday morning fire.

The blaze at 179 N. Byers Road was first reported at about 7 a.m. Wednesday. Richard Lowery, chief of the Byers Volunteer Fire Department, said the house was engulfed in flames when crews arrived. Two garages and a pickup also burned.

Mike Kumor, mayor of Byers, said the home is insured.

The cause of the fire in unknown, but is believed to have started in a garage.

The Auchmoodys escaped without injury. They have six cats and five dogs. Two cats and one dog have been located. It is not known if any pets died in the fire.

Red Cross is providing assistance to the family, said Clay County Emergency Management Coordinator Kent Neville.

Volunteer departments from Petrolia, Charlie-Thornberry, Jolly and Dean also responded to the fire.
