Reuben Schaffner, 88, of Byers, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, in Wichita Falls.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Friday Oct. 11 at the First Baptist Church of Byers with Matthew Schaffner, Phil Smith and Rev. Ken Johannan officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Byers under the direction of Davis Funeral Home of Henrietta.
Mr. Schaffner was born July 31, 1925 in Hurnville to Gotfred and Pauline (Bitz) Schaffner. He married Erdie “Nell” Dorman June 6, 1948 in the Riverland Community in Clay County. He was a farmer and rancher. He was a member and a deacon of the First Baptist Church of Byers. He served his country in World War II with the 7th Infantry Division in Okinawa and received two Purple Hearts. He was one of the youngest first sergeants in the occupation force of Korea.
He is preceded in death by one sister, Gerta Schaffner; and two brothers, Alfred Scahffner and Edwin Schaffner.
Survivors include his wife, Erdie “Nell” Schaffner of Byers; four children, Nelda Schaffner of Shawnee Mission, Kan., Karen Schaffner of Fukuoka, Japan, Gary Schaffner and wife Janet of Norman Okla., and Marilyn Mahurin of Byers; three brothers, Leonard Schaffner of Henrietta, Leroy Schaffner of Henrietta, and Daniel Schaffner of Burkburnett; two sisters, Ella Mae Smith of Wichita Falls, and Mary Lou Teague of Henrietta; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will be at Davis Funeral Home from 7-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10.
