Pirates hold on to early lead, improve to 2-0


Pirate quarterback Dustin Hanusch connected with teammate Bandy Mataska on two touchdown passes in the first quarter Friday night, en route to a 19-7 win over Collinsville.

With the win, the Pirates improve to 2-0 this season.

Mataska put Petrolia on the board first, taking a Hanusch pass 37 yards to the end zone. Hanusch then found Mataska on a 22-yard touchdown pass, giving the Pirates a 13-point lead that would hold up through halftime.

Collinsville narrowed the Petrolia lead in the third quarter with a 27-yard touchdown pass from Conner Daly to Andrew Harris, 13-7.

Petrolia answered in the fourth quarter when Mataska carried in a 71-yard touchdown run.

Petrolia passed for 209 yards on nine of 24 attempts. Hanusch had eight completions for 187 yards. Mataska finished with 145 receiving yards and had eight carries for 67 yards rushing. Dane Williams had three catches for 26 yards, while Brandon Shipley carried the ball eight times for 23 yards.
