Pirates rounds up Buffaloes to open season with 40-7 win

Petrolia’s Dustin Hanusch took to the air Thursday night, connecting with receivers for three touchdown passes, leading the Pirates to a season opener win over Cross Plains.

Petrolia-FB-GraphicBodie Cokendolpher capped Petrolia’s offensive effort with a pair of late touchdown romps and a 40-7 final score.

Playing in Jacksboro, Cross Plains struck first with an 80-yard touchdown run from Ryan Laminick. It would be the only time the Petrolia defense would fail to stop the Buffaloes. The Pirates held Cross Plains to a 171 yards rushing on 32 carries and three yards passing. Cross Plains was limited to five first downs.

Bandy Mataska put Petrolia’s first points on the board with a 45-yard jaunt in the first quarter. Dane Williams scored the point-after kick to even the score at seven.

Hanusch found Ryan Harrison on an 11-yard pass play in the second quarter to put Petrolia up 14-7 at halftime, and again in the third for a 27-yard strike. Hanusch connected with Dane Williams for a 50-yard touchdown in the fourth.

Hanusch completed 10 of 19 pass attempts for 172 yards.

Cokendolpher scored on runs of 12 yards and 27 yards. He finished with 92 yards rushing. Williams led the team in receiving yards with 104 on four catches, followed by Harrison with 67 yards on five receptions.

Petrolia ran the ball 30 times for 196 yards.
