Early morning accident: 4 Wire Road fatality identified as Bowie businessman

The identities of two people involved in a fatal car crash on 4 Wire Road, southeast of Vashti, early Friday morning have been released by law enforcement.

The driver of a trash truck discovered the accident just before 6:30 a.m. Friday where the road crosses a deep valley referred to locally as “Granny’s Bottom.” Investigators believe the accident happened several hours earlier.

Rick Gunter, 57, a Bowie business man and home builder, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle, Laurie McCullar, of Bowie, suffered life-threatening injuries. McCullar was transported by helicopter to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. Gunter’s body has been sent to the Dallas Medical Examiner for autopsy.

Both Gunter and McCullar were ejected from the vehicle. Neither was wearing seat belts.

Trooper Tony Fulton, DPS spokesperson, said McCullar and Gunter were traveling north on 4 Wire Road in a 2000 Jeep Wrangler when the vehicle when the vehicle came off a small hill and went airborne. When the vehicle hit the road, it slid sideway off of the left side of the road, hitting the ditch and trees. The Jeep again went airborne before rolling several times.

Speed is believed to have been a factor.
