Powell to hit the hardwood for Midwestern State Mustangs

Nick Powell, a senior at Henrietta High School, has signed a letter of intent to play Basketball for Midwestern State University.

The 6-6 forward was surrounded by family in a formal signing held Wednesday, May 1 in the foyer of the Henrietta High School gym.

In his senior season, Powell led the Bearcats to the team’s first playoff berth in a decade. Powell averaged 19 points, eight rebounds and 2.8 assists per game. He was named District 8-2A MVP and earned a spot on the TABC Class 2A Region II team.

Midwestern State, a NCAA Div. II school, is the 2012 Lone Star Conference Champion, and came within one game of advancing to the South Central Regional Final. The Mustangs have earned four appearances in the Lone Star Conference championship bracket in the last seven years. Last year, the Mustangs marked their fifth-straight season with 20-plus wins.

Powell is the son of Jay Don and Tracy Powell of Dean.
