Petrolia’s Smith competes in state golf tournament


Petrolia Lady Pirate Breanna Smith finished seventh in the Class A State Golf Tournament held Thursday, May 2, and Friday May 3 at the Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin.

Smith, a freshman, scored 173 in two days of competition. Shoe finished in 87 strokes on Thursday, and 86 on Friday. Lions Municipal is a par 71 course.

“I am so excited to get to compete at that level. What makes it even more fun, is that London Steele, from Archer City, who I have been golfing with since we were little kids, also qualified,” said Smith about the state tournament.

Smith qualified for the state tournament with a two-day total of 152 at the Region II-A tournament in Baird April 15- 16, Breanna shot rounds of 79 and 73, placing third overall for the bronze medal.

Steele, a sophomore at Archer City High School, finished in third place at state with 85-77—162

“She did extremely well at the Region II-A tournament and I am so proud for her.”

Golfers from Memphis took second and Weimar finished third in the individual standings. Memphis, Grapeland and Weimar finished first, second and third in the team standings.
