The first turkey to be entered in the seventh annual Clay County Turkey Fest was brought in for weight and measure ate about 6 p.m. Thursday evening.

The Rio Grande turkey was harvest Thursday afternoon by Adam Gonzenbach on a property near the Red River and weighed in at 21.9 pounds with spurs measuring a total  14 inches with a beard of 9 12/16 inches. Gonzenbach’s bird scored 319.5625.

Gonzenbach is participating in the Battle of the Beards, in which local hunters compete against each other. The winner of the Battle of the Beards will be announced during Saturday’s festivities on the courthouse square.
