Volunteer fire fighters from Petrolia, Byers and Dean-Dale responded to a large structure fire Sunday night that claimed a large shop but left a Petrolia family’s home untouched.

Located at the River Road home of Charles and Gilda Knight, the 1,600 square-foot shop and its contents are a total loss. The fire was reported at about 7:20 p.m. Sunday. The building was fully engulfed when fire fighters arrived. An outbuilding some 15 feet west of the shop was damaged.

Once fire fighters arrived on scene, the fire was quickly contained.

The fire is believed to have started when winds whipped up embers from a meat smoker located under one of the shops awnings, catching firewood stacked nearby, said Petrolia VFD member Tony Fox.

Some of the numerous outdoors and sports equipment lost include a bass boat and ATVs.
