Update: Bellevue to face Frost in Region III semifinal, 5 p.m. Friday at Tyler Junior College.
After a tight first half, Bellevue fought for a 69-50 win over Ector in the Region III boys quarterfinal Tuesday night in Gainesville.
With the win, Bellevue advances to the Class A Div. II Region III tournament in Tyler.
The Eagles took a 25-23 halftime lead and turned it into an 11-point surplus to open the fourth, scoring 20 in the third period, while holding Ector to 11 in the quarter, 45-34.
Bellevue continued to build its lead early in the fourth with a 10-point run in the first two minutes alone.
The Eagles finished with a 24-point effort in the fourth. Bellevue opened with a 13-12 lead over Ector in the first quarter, and a 12-11 drive in the second.
Free throws played a big role in the win. Bellevue shot 70 percent from the charity stripe, hitting 14 -f 20 attempts, while Ector shot six of 12 for 50 percent.
Brandt Cassetty led the Eagles with 20 points, including a a pair of threes, one in the first and again in the third. Tyler Terry followed with 12 points, while Matthew Belcher and John Grunseich scored 10 each. Broc Terry added nine, including a key fourth quarter three-pointer. Jakob Watkins scored eight.
The Eagles will face Frost in a regional semifinal, set for 5 p.m. Friday at Tyler Junior College. The Region III championship will follow on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
