The Henrietta and Clay County Chamber of Commerce will host the 86th annual Chamber Banquet on Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Holman Center, 211 N. Clay St., in Henrietta.
The Chamber was first chartered in 1927, and to celebrate its record-breaking growth, the Board of Directors is bringing featured radio celebrity, Tumbleweed Smith, as the banquet’s speaker and entertainment.
Smith is producer of The Sound of Texas, a radio series that began in Big Spring and became the most widely syndicated feature radio show in Texas. In doing his daily program for more than 40 years, this native Texan has gathered the largest private collection of oral history in the United States. Texas Highways magazine says he has probably recorded the voices of more Texas characters than anyone else.
He has taught broadcasting and speech in the University of Texas system for 34 years. He graduated from Baylor University with a bachelor of arts degree in English, earned a master’s degree in Journalism from the University of Missouri, and studied law at Drake University. His one-man shows have been performed all over Texas, in six other states, and in four foreign countries.
During the banquet, the newly elected 2013 Directors will be introduced by Randy Schaffner, incoming president. Kathy Pierce, outgoing president, will also recognize and honor the chamber’s retiring directors for their dedicated service. They are Linda Burleson of Clay County Memorial Hospital, Kay Lynn Gonzenbach, Tonya Gilmore of Wells Fargo Bank, Melissa Roberson of First National Bank of Byers, Stephen Ross of Trinity Air Conditioning, and Sharon Tucker of Atmos Energy.
The evening will conclude with the recognition of the nominees and recipients of the following awards: 2012 Business of the Year; 2012 Individual of the Year; and the 2012 Community Beautification Award. Banquet attendees will also have the opportunity to be entered into a drawing for several luxurious gift baskets, to bid on silent auction items, and to bid on a weekend get-away live auction item.
Banquet tickets are $25 and must be purchased in advance. Deadline to purchase tickets is Wednesday, Jan. 23. Tickets are available at the chamber office, Legend Bank, First National Bank of Byers and Wells Fargo Bank. Tables seating 10 are also available for $250.
