Bearcats win title: County teams dominate Windthorst bracket

With Henrietta’s Cole Burns and Bellevue’s Brandt Cassetty trading buckets, the Bearcats and the Eagles battled for the boys championship in the Windthorst Basketball Tournament, a bracket dominated by Clay County teams.

Henrietta earned the tournament title, dropping the Bellevue to second place. Two-and-a-half hours earlier, Midway had claimed third place.

The Bearcats relied on its depth to beat the Eagles, but Bellevue gave Henrietta a run for its money early on. The Eagles opened with a 17-13 lead in the first quarter. Henrietta came back strong in the second quarter, outscoring Bellevue 22-14 for a four-point lead at halftime. Henrietta earned its win in the third period, scoring 26 points while holding the Eagles to 12. Bellevue outscored Henrietta 19-18 in the fourth.

Burns led the Bearcats with 26 points, but Bellevue’s Brandt Cassetty, on fire from outside the three-point arc, led all scorers. Cassetty sunk four three-pointers, and finished with 28 points.

Henrietta defeated Midway 60-47 to advance to the final. Nick Powell led the Bearcats with 22 points, while Brody Wilson scored 15 for the Falcons.

Midway came away with a 44-37 win over Windthorst for third place after taking a 24-17 lead at the half. Ben Forester and Josh Fulbright scored 10 points each I the win.

Windthorst had moved on to the third-place game after falling to Bellevue in Friday’s semifinals, 60-48. Cassetty scored 17 in the game to lead Bellevue, followed by Tyler Terry with 14.

In round one on Thursday, Midway, led by Mark Nall with 12 points, defeated Electra, 47-30. Henrietta stuffed Quanah, 67-29. Powell, Burns and Matthew Reed each scored in double digits. Bellevue’s Tyler Terry scored 17 to lead the Eagles in a 46-29 win over Nocona.
