Minor injuries in two-vehicle accident near Bellevue

A late-model BMW was severely damaged and its driver treated for minor injuries following an accident that occurred shortly before 1 p.m. Friday afternoon.

A South Dakota man stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base was transported to Clay County Memorial Hospital Friday afternoon following a two-vehicle accident on hwy. 287, near Bellevue.

Sam Joseph Bjorkman, 22, was driving a 2004 BMW sedan south on Hwy. 287 when he struck a 1997 Chevrolet three-quarter ton pickup driven by Bob Hatfield, 55, of Henrietta.

Bjorkman suffered minor injuries, including glass in his eyes and embedded in his skin, and a possible broken arm, said DPS Trooper Ben Wolf.

Hatfield had pulled out of a private drive onto the highway when his flatbed pickup was struck from behind by Bjorkman’s car. Bjorkman was in the right-side lane as Hatfield pulled off of the shoulder.

The impact damaged the right rear corner of the flatbed, and caused Hatfield’s cattle feeder to overturn. Hatfield was not injured. Bjorkman’s car was heavily damaged in the front and on the passenger’s side.

Bjorkman’s car was totaled in the accident, which occurred at about 1 p.m.
