Bellevue coasted through the Fantasy of Lights Div. III bracket Friday and Saturday, but ran into a brick wall in the boys championship game — a brick wall named Derrick Paul.
Paul, named tournament MVP at the conclusion of Saturday’s game, scored 33 points to lead the Cubs in a 69-50 win over Bellevue. With the loss, the Eagles take second in the Fantasy of Lights tournament.
Olney is ranked No. 7 among Div. I Class A teams in the state.
Brandt Cassetty, one of three Eagles to earn all-tournament honors, led Bellevue’s scoring effort with 16 points, including three’s in the second and fourth quarters. Also earning all-tournament honors were Tyler Terry, with 13 points, and Broc Terry with nine points in the title game. Both Terry’s also hit three-pointers, Broc in the third and Tyler in the fourth.
Matthew Belcher added eight points for Bellevue, while John Grunseich scored four. The Eagles hit six of 13 free throw attempts.
Cassetty, who had pestered Olney’s offense all afternoon, fouled out with 5.7 seconds left in the game.
Olney took a 17-12 lead in the first quarter, and 17-14 in the second. The Cubs outscored Bellevue 19-14 in the third and 16-10 in the fourth quarter.
Bellevue advanced to the title game on wins against Wichita Falls Heat, Petrolia and Hirschi’s freshman team. See related story.
