Velma Ashton of Petrolia


Velma Zelma Ashton, 91, of Petrolia, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, in Henrietta.

Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15, at the First Baptist Church of Petrolia with Rev. Aaron Lindsey, and Hospice of Wichita Falls Chaplain, Rev. Paul DeLuca officiating. Burrial will follow at Petrolia Cemetery under the direction of Owens and Brumley Funeral Home of Wichita Falls.

Mrs. Ashton was born March 29, 1921 in Brownsboro to John Lassie and Minnie (Stephens) Leetch. On Aug. 23, 1936, she and Orvel Layton Ashton were married in Athens. She worked for many years in food service for the Petrolia ISD and later for the Green Thumb Association. She was a homemaker.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Orvel Layton Ashton in 1978; three grandchildren, Timothy Wayne Ashton, Donnie Lindsey and Kelli Gomila; and three sisters, Lillie Jeanes, Marie Sims and Leona Sherrill.

She is survived by two daugters, Melba Farmer of Petrolia and Mary Whitaker of Burleson; three sons, Orvel Ashton and wife Sally of Burkburnett, William Ashton and wife Susan of Iowa Park, and Tommy Ashton and wife Brenda of Iowa Park; 17 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends and family at the church from 1:30- 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 15.

Memorials can be made to the Senior Citizen Center of Petrolia.
