Henrietta’s Junior High Bearcats swept Quanah on Thursday, Sept. 20. The seventh graders won 30-12 and the eighth grade game was also dominated by the Bearcats 44-12.
Henrietta was in total control of both games, grabbing early leads and never looking back.
Zack West used good blocking from his teammates to score four touchdowns in their victory. West scored his first touchdown on a 30-yard run behind Noah Mabry and Logan Plaster-Duram blocks. Brody Offield followed Ross Cantwell and Weston Max for the two-point conversion. The lead went to 14-0 when West scampered 22 yards for the score, but the extra point was no good. After the Bearcats backed Quanah up deep in their own territory, the Indians elected to take a safety and give the Bearcats a 16-0 lead. Before half, Patrick Holcomb recovered a fumble which set up another 30-yard touchdown run by West and the Bearcats led 22-0 at halftime.
After a scoreless third quarter, Quanah put a touchdown on the scoreboard, but moments later, West broke six tackles en route to a 61-yard touchdown run followed by Offield’s extra point. Quanah scored with just over a minute left in the game, but was too late.
Clayton Fugett stripped and recovered a fumble for the Bearcats with Holcomb, West, Max, Cantwell and Aaron having good games both defensively and offensively. The entire Bearcat team played well.
The Bearcats used a wide variety of scoring threats in their 44-12 victory at Quanah and kept their record undefeated at 2-0. Kandon Bennett scored three touchdowns, Mason Hanson scored twice and Ben McCreary scored once. Blaine Long scored on four of the extra points.
Following an outstanding rushing attack by Hanson to open the game, Corbin Douthitt hit Bennett on a five-yard pass with a key block from Ethan Scholl.
Quanah tied the game on its following possession, but was as close as they would get.
Hanson responded with a 26-yard run behind Conner Chambers, Skylar Castro and Sterling Headrick with Long adding the extra point. Tyler Lujon recovered a fumble in the second quarter, which eventually set up a 28-yard touchdown pass from Douthitt to Bennett and the extra point from Long. Moments before half, Bennett took a reverse handoff from Hanson and scampered 52 yards untouched for a touchdown. Long’s extra point put the Bearcats up 30-6 hat half.
In the third quarter, McCreary recovered a fumble caused by Castro and later scored on a 32-yard pass from Douthitt. With the game in favor of the Bearcats, Hanson put the final Henrietta points on the board when he bounced around the right side and down the sideline for a 58-yard touchdown run. Coty Franklin, Corbin Bloodworth and Tyler Lujon opened a hole for Long to add the extra point. Quanah scored a late touchdown that had no factor in the outcome of the final decision.
The victory was a total team effort provided by the Bearcats.
The seventh grade will play Windthorst this week at Petrolia, beginning at 4:30 p.m. The Eighth Grade will travel to S and S Consolidated for a 4:30 p.m. kick off.
