A West Texas truck driver escaped without injury after his tractor-trailer veered of off Hwy. 287 and struck a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train Saturday morning.

The accident was reported at 10:40 a.m. Saturday, July 28, at the intersection of Hwy. 287 and Anderson road, south of Henrietta.

Stephen Joseph Kane, 520, of Canyon, was traveling north in a 2010 International. State Trooper Bryce Blake said Kane stated that he looked away from the road for a short time, causing him to run off the road and onto a railroad embankment.

The truck jumped the embankment, striking the top of a BNSF railcar before landing between the embankment and the railroad tracks.

The accident sparked a small grass fire that burned approximately one acre and was quickly extinguished by the Henrietta VFD.

Kane was hauling appliances and various hardware to a Lowes home improvement store in Amarillo. He received only scratches in the accident.
