A man in the custody of the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office who was shot Thursday at a roadside park east of Henrietta has died, said DPS spokesman Tony Fulton.
A Grayson County deputy was transporting Nathan Pierce, 32, of Sherman, to Wichita Falls on an emergency detention order Thursday afternoon, said Sgt. Rickey Wheeler of the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office. There was an altercation between Pierce and the deputy at the roadside park on Hwy. 82, five miles east of Henrietta.
The deputy shot Pierce at the roadside park during an attempted escape, Fulton said. Pierce was carried by ambulance to United Regional Health Care, where he died during surgery.
The name of the deputy involved in the shooting has not been released. Wheeler said the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office will conduct an internal affairs investigation in accordance with the department’s policy and procedure.
The incident is under the investigation of the Texas Rangers.
The shooting was reported to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office at about 4 p.m. Thursday. A late model Dodge van identified as a Grayson County Sheriff’s Office vehicle was parked at the roadside park with the driver’s door open. Evidence markers were placed some distance from the van.
Wheeler said the GCSO will issue a press release later today.
