Deed record request a scam

Dear Editor:

I would like to make the public aware of a letter that is being mailed to Clay County residents regarding property deeds.   The letter from the “Record Retrieval Department” in Austin, Texas, claims that for a fee of $86, they will mail the resident a copy of his or her deed.  If requested after June 20, an additional fee of $35 will be added.  This is a scam.  If you receive a letter you are urged to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.

All Clay County deeds are recorded in the Office of the County Clerk located in the Courthouse Annex.  All property records are available for public viewing during normal business hours at that location.  In most cases, you do not need a copy of your deed in your possession.  If for any reason you do need a copy of your deed, you may obtain one from the County Clerk’s office for $1 per page (usually about $2-$4 total).

Please share this information with your family and neighbors.

Thank you,

Sasha Kelton
