
Ryan Crafton, Austin Dowell and Brittany Skelton earned first place in the Turkey Barrel Race during Turkey Fest activities on the courthouse square Saturday.
Three Henrietta High School students earned $500 scholarships by winning the Turkey Barrel Race during Turkey Fest activities on the courthouse square Saturday.
Turnout was strong for the event. This is the first year the Henrietta and Clay County Chamber of Commerce have held the festival on the square, and although no official counts are yet available, attendance is estimated at between 1,500 and 2,000.
Two teams entered the barrel race, both from Henrietta. Teams were made up of three students, who built a turkey-like contraction to ride. the “turkeys” had to be pushed, pulled or carried. No motors were allowed. The teams also earned points for creativity and ingenuity.
The winning team of Brittany Skelton, Austin Dowell and Ryan Crafton competed the course in 27.4 seconds, and earned the most points for creativity. The second place team of Jonathan Gardner, Monica Dugan and Allison Forrester finished in 22.7 second. There was only a four-point difference between the two teams.
