McKelvey home run puts Bearcats back in playoff hunt

Henrietta baseball is back in the hunt fir a playoff berth after a hard-fought 10-9 win over Ponder Friday night, thanks in part to a Coty McKelvey homerun in the third inning.

Down 2-0, the Bearcats pounded out six runs in the third to overpower the Lions. It would be the difference in the game. Ponder scored one in the third inning, and five in the fifth. Henrietta added one run in the fifth. Henrietta and Ponder added two runs each in the sixth.

McKelvey finished with four RBI’s. Zach Byers and Philip Davis also batted in runners. Henrietta produced eight hits.

Ben Fletcher earned with win with help from Korben Allen. In six innings of work, Fletcher faced 34 batters, throwing 56 strikes. Strong fielding from the Bearcats boosted Henrietta, claiming 11 groundouts and two flyouts with Fletcher on the mound. Allen relieved Fletcher in the seventh for two strikeouts and a groundout.

With the win, Henrietta improves to 5-3 in District 9-2A, and 14-8-2 for the season.

Henrietta hosts Krum at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Only four district games remain.
