Seniors to earn scholarships through ‘turkey barrel race’

Three seniors from one of the five high schools in Clay County will each win a $500 scholarship from the Henrietta and Clay County Chamber of Commerce during Turkey Fest 2012 by competing in the Turkey Barrel Race on the courthouse square Saturday, April 21.

Teams of three must build a “turkey” that can be pushed, pulled, pedaled or carried through a barrel race during the festival. The participants are judged on their creativity in designing their “turkey”, and their time to complete the barrel race. The grand prize winner will receive a $1,500 in scholarship funds to be divided evenly among team members. The scholarships will be awarded at graduation.

Each team must have male and female members. All entries must be powered by people, no motors, electricity or battery power. Judging will be based on a 100-point scale, 50 for creativity and 50 for fastest time around the barrels.

Entries must be registered by Wednesday, April18 at the Chamber Caboose or by email to Betty Ellsworth at

Participants are asked to meet at the bandstand on the southeast corner of the courthouse lawn at 11:30 a.m. April 21.
