Franke third, Costa eighth at state powerlifting meet

After claiming regional powerlifting titles three weeks ago, Bearcats J.D. Franke and Joseph Costa competed in the Texas High School Powerlifting Association’s state men’s meet Saturday in Abilene.

Franke finished third in state with a total lift weight of 1,125 pounds in the 132-pound weight class. Franke lifted 450 pounds in squat, 250 on the bench press and 425 in dead lift.

The total lift weight was 35 pounds short of his regional performance. The difference came in squat, where he lifted 485 at regionals.

Darrion McMahan of Stockdale won the state title with a total lift weight of 1,205.

Costa placed eighth in the 242-pound weight class with a total lift of 1,360 pounds. Costa finished the squat with a lift of 600. He bench pressed 335 and dead lifted 425. Although Costa beat his regional squat by 10 pounds, his overall results were off of the regional mark by 10, lost in the dead lift.

Dewey Fleming of Redwater won the state title in the 242 class with a total weight of 1,680.
