Ponder spoils early lead by Bearcats

A Ponder base runner scores a run in the fifth inning Tuesday in Henrietta after beating the throw to catcher Joe Dell Williams. After taking an early lead, the Bearcats fell to their district opponent.

Henrietta built an early lead Wednesday, but Ponder roared back to steal a 2-1 win over the Bearcats.

The Bearcats varsity baseball team took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, and held Ponder scoreless through the fourth. But Ponder rallied in the fifth, putting two runs on the scoreboard.

Ponder outhit Henrietta 4-2, but committed three errors, allowing Bearcats Zach Byers, Conner Fletcher and Korben Allen to reach base.

Allen drove in Henrietta’s only run for one RBI. Allen and Byers each had one stolen base, while Byers and Philip Davis were caught stealing.

On the mound for Henrietta, Allen took the loss. In seven innings of work, Allen faced 28 batters for 12 strikeouts. He threw 118 pitches.

With the loss, Henrietta falls to 7-6-2. Friday, the Bearcats travel to Krum for a district matchup. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
