Franke, Costa qualify for THSPA state powerlifting meet


Henrietta’s J.D. Franke and Joseph Costa have qualified for the state powerlifting meet, each finishing in first place in their respective weight classes at the Region 6, Division 3 meet Saturday in Ponder.

The boys state meet is March 24 in Abilene. Lady Cat Taylor Burch earned a first place at the girls’ regional meet Saturday, Feb. 25, and will compete in the state girls meet March 16 in Corpus Christi.

Franke qualified in the 132-pound weight class with a total lift weight of 1,160. He finished with a 485-pound squat, a 250-pound bench press and a 425-pound dead lift.

Henrietta’s Christian Farr just missed a qualification; placing third with a total lift weight of 940 pounds. Farr squatted 350 pounds, benched 210 and dead lifted 380.

Costa earned his trip to state in the 242-pound weight class with a total lift weight of 1,370 pounds. Costa finished with 590 pounds in the squat, 335 on the bench press and 445 in dead lift.

Also competing at the regional level, Parker West finished with a total weight of 1,305 to take third in the 275-pound weight class. West squatted 555 pounds, benched 335 and dead lifted 415 pounds.

First and second place from each weight class advance to state.
