Lady Cat Taylor Burch qualifies for state powerlifting meet

Taylor Burch of Henrietta will make the trip to Corpus Christi for the Texas High School Powerlifting Association’s state meet, March 16. The junior Lady ‘Cat qualified for state by dominating the Region 6, Div. III meet Saturday in Leonard.

Burch was ranked no. 1 among the region’s lifters going into the meet.

Competing in the 114-pound weight class, Burch had a combined lift weight of 570 pounds. She lifted 235 pounds in the squat, 95 on the bench and 240 in dead lift.

Competing in the same class, J.J. Ramos finished sixth in the region with a total weight of 460 pounds. Ramos squatted 175 pounds, benched 95 and picked up 190 pounds in the dead lift.

Brooke Hoff, competing in the 148-pound weight class, could have taken second, said Coach Byron West, but instead made a push for first place, and a state qualification. Hoff finished sixth.

“I have to be proud of her for that,” said West. “I’d rather somebody try that then to settle.”

Hoff finished lifted 230 in the squat, bench pressed 120 and dead lifted 190 pounds for a total lift weight of 540 pounds.

Also competing for the Lady Cats, freshman Makenzie White disqualified in the squat.

Henrietta’s boys will have their turn at regionals Saturday in Ponder. In the 132-pound class, Henrietta qualifiers J.D. Franke and Christian Farr are ranked first and second, respectively. Joseph Costa is ranked no. 1 in the 242-pound weight class, while Parker West is ranked third in the 275-pound class.
