Midway conquers Coolidge for area title

The Midway Falcons earned an area title with a 63-60 win over Coolidge Friday.

Midway squeezed out a 63-60 win over the Coolidge Yellowjackets Friday night in Springtown, claiming an area title in Class A Div. II, Region III.

The Falcons took a 24-17 lead over the Yellowjackets in the first quarter. That, combined with a 13-11 fourth, would be just enough to hold off the Coolidge squad. The Yellowjackets outscored Midway 13-9 in the second and 19-17 in the third quarter.

Junior Brody Wilson led the team with 22 points, including two three-pointers, followed by Keaton Merkel with 16, Ben Forester with 11, Mark Nall with nine, Josh Fulbright with a three-pointer and Ryan Terry with two points.

The Falcons scored seven free throws on 13 attempts, compared to seven of 14 from Coolidge.

With the win, the Falcons earned a birth to the regional tournament, and will face Dodd City the quarterfinal Tuesday night in Lindsey. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
