Brand registration ends Feb. 29

All Texas livestock brands expired Aug. 30, 2011, with a six-month renewal period following. The renewal period draws to a close at the end of this month.

Brand owners must renew their brand by Feb. 29 in the County Clerk’s Office located in the Courthouse Annex at 214 N. Main St. in Henrietta, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-noon and 1p.m.-5p.m.  The filing fee is $16 per brand, per location on animal, per type of animal.

“Over the last five months, brand renewal has been a big part of business conducted in county clerks’ offices,” said County Clerk Sasha Kelton. “The Clay County office recorded 224 brands in September alone, most of which were renewals.  There are approximately 1,000 brands on record in Clay County.”

And the Clerk’s Office anticipates another busy day March 1.

“Some customers have been waiting for months to snag the brand they desire, in hopes that the current owner will forget, or choose not, to renew it.  Brands not renewed by the close of the renewal period will become open and available to the public for registration.”

Brand registration in Texas occurs every 10 years.
