FFA and 4-H students selling projects in the Clay County Junior Livestock Show and Youth Fair auctions Saturday night earned more money with fewer lots than the year before.

Ryan Crafton sold the grand champion steer for $2,200, to the Red River Chevy Dealers, but it wouldn’t be the highest bid of the night. Riley Investments of Weatherford purchased a steer owned by Klayton Hoff, a Clay County 4-H member from Henrietta, for $4,000.

It is Crafton’s second-straight year to earn grand champion in the market steer classes. Last year, Crafton’s steer brought $2,000. Kynlee Copeland of the Petrolia FFA sold the grand champion market hog for $1,000. Kolton Beeler, Henrietta FFA, sold the grand champion meat goat for $750. Club mate Austin Trent sold the grand champion lamb for $900. Jordan Davis of Midway, a Clay County 4-H member, earned $450 for the grand champion broilers, a number that is down from last year. Dayton Shook of the Bellevue FFA sold the grand champion rabbit meat pen for $450.

Ninety-two lots were sold during the livestock premium auction bringing in $58,650 before add-ons, an increase of $3,900. Though the increase is an improvement on the 2010 mark, it is approximately $11,000 less than in 2010. The Henrietta Kiwanis Club buyers pool accounted for about $9,000.

This year, grand and reserve champion animals alone earned $9,550 on 10 lots. The reserve grand champion lamb did not sell because it’s owner, Austin Trent of the Henrietta FFA, instead sold his grand champion animal.

Buyers in the youth fair auction spent $3,850, an increase of $350 over last year.

Billy Easter of Wichita Livestock won the floor, setting the market price for hogs, goats and sheep. Hogs brought $65 per hundredweight (65-cents per pound); goats, $1.60 per hundredweight; and lambs, $1.40 per hundredweight. The floor price for hogs is up $10 over last year, while goats declined $19, and lambs were down by $27 per hundredweight. No steers were sold for market.
