Petrolia teams earn home tourney titles



Two local teams dominated bracket play in Petrolia’s Clay County Classic basketball tournament last week. Saturday night, the Pirates defeated Bellevue for the championship.

It was a second-half run that put Petrolia in position to take the win.

Bellevue led the Pirates 9-8 to close the first period. Both teams scored 10 in the second. Petrolia came alive after halftime, outscoring the Eagles 17-11 in the third. Petrolia and Bellevue scored 15 each in the fourth.

Pirate Tyler Beechler led all scorers with 16 points. Teammate Coby Acheson scored 15, followed by Tyler Colley with 11 points.

Brandt Cassetty led the Eagles with 15 points, followed by Trace Garrison with nine points.

Notre Dame defeated Chillicothe 66-51 for third place, while Bryson topped Christ Academy 44-18 for consolation.

Varsity girls

Danica Bustos and Alaina Anderson combined for 22 points in the Lady Pirates championship win over Bellevue in the girls championship game Friday afternoon.

Bustos scored 12 in the 49-24 win, followed by Anderson with 10.

Cassidy York and Bailey Terry led the Lady Eagles with 11 points each.

Notre Dame defeated Bryson 40-10 for third place, while Chillicothe beat Christ Academy in the consolation bracket.
