Petrolia ended its 2011 football season Friday night, but with a bang, taking a 56-26 win over Chico.
Petrolia scored four times before the Dragons could break the goal line, and would finish with six touchdowns in the first half alone.
Coby Acheson struck first with a three-yard touchdown run, followed by a 32-yard strike from Will Morath and a 24-yard pay dirt pass from Brady Mataska to Morath – all in the first quarter.
Morath scored Petrolia’s fourth touchdown in the second quarter on a 24-yard run.
Chico got on the board midway through the quarter on a six-yard run, but the Pirates answered with two touchdowns, a 44-yard pass from Mataska to Morath and a 35-yard interception return by Jared Smith.
Chico closed the half with a 28-yard run to score, and opened the third quarter with a 19-yard touchdown run.
Petrolia’s only third quarter points came on a 22-yard field goal from Smith.
Chico posted its final points in the fourth on a two-yard run.
Petrolia scored two in the fourth, a 14-yard pass play from Mataska to Acheson and a 33-yard Tyler Sullivan run.
Petrolia finished with 481 yards offense. The Pirates had 303 yards rushing on 39 carries and completed six of 17 passes for 178 yards. Acheson led the Petrolia offense with 215 yards, carrying the ball for 81 yards and receiving five passes for 134 yards. Morath finished with 180 yards rushing.
Chico completed 19 of 40 pass attempts for 188 yards and rushed 118 yards on 25 carries.
