Petrolia falls short in comeback against Valley View

Petrolia chased Valley View with a fourth quarter rally Friday night but came up short, 30-21.

With the loss, the Pirates drop to 2-5 on the season and 0-2 in district play.

Valley View struck in the first quarter, leaving the Pirates to play catch-up. Brady Mataska evened the score with a one-yard run in the second.

But the lead wouldn’t last long as Valley View ran the kickoff back for a touchdown for a 7-15 halftime lead.

Valley view scored three more times, a touchdown and field goal in the third, and a touchdown in the fourth, before Petrolia could strike pay dirt.

The touchdowns came on a 17-yard pass and a 56-yard run, respectively.

Petrolia narrowed the gap with a 51-yard pass from Mataska to Will Morath and a Mataska pass to Dustin Hanusch.

Mataska completed 25 of 38 pass attempts for 284 yards. Coby Acheson caught 11 passes for 115 yards. Petrolia finished with 88 yards rushing on 25 carries.
