Petrolia knew going into Friday’s District 5-A Div. I opener that it faced a powerful defense from Muenster.
And the Hornets were more than happy to show it off.
The undefeated district favorite held the Pirates to a mere 79 yards total offense. Meanwhile, the Hornet offense put up 411 yards offense, handing Petrolia an 0-1 district record, 43-0.
Muenster scored on a 45-yard run early in the first quarter, taking an 8-0 lead on the two-point conversion. The Hornets closed the first up 14-0 with a three-yard touchdown run.
In the second quarter, Muenster scored twice on pass plays of 28 and 25 yards. The two strikes were interrupted by a three-yard touchdown run.
The Hornets scored their final touchdown in the third quarter on a 14-yard run, then scored a safety after blocking a Petrolia punt.
Muenster finished with 305 yards rushing on 28 carries, averaging 10.8 yards per carry. The team completed four of 12 pass attempts for 106 yards.
Muenster outdid the Pirates in first downs 14-5.
Led by Coby Acheson with 14 carries for 29 yards, the Pirates averaged only 1.54 yards per carry. Petrolia finished with 54 yards on 35 carries and completed four of 10 passes for 25 yards. Two of those came from Brady Mataska, who finished the night with 18 yards passing. Receiver Dustin Hanusch took one pass for 14 yards.
Petrolia forced two Hornet fumbles and recovered one. With the loss, the Pirates fall to a 2-4 record.
