Rodeo draws 221 entries, cut short by storm


Cut short by a thunderstorm that brought some much needed rain to Clay County – and put Tex Rickard Memorial Arena in the pitch dark – the 2011 Pioneer Reunion Rodeo drew 221 entries in nine events.

Only two events were completed during Saturday’s performance, and the remaining contestants were refunded their entry fees.

Two local men placed first and second in one of the featured events when Jarrod Johnson of Petrolia took first place in ranch bronc riding with a three-night high score of 76 points. Henrietta’s Owen Wuthrich followed with a 72.

The other feature event, double mugging, was donated by two Guthrie men with local ties. The team of Jeff and Zane Daniels of Guthrie took second with a time of 37.15 seconds. Zane Daniels and Jay Hurt, also of Guthrie placed first with 20.82 seconds.

In the FFA calf scramble, Petrolia took first place, followed by Henrietta in second, Midway in third, Bellevue in fourth and Byers in fifth.

In the kids calf scramble Thursday night, Abbie Zamzow of Henreitta took first place, followed by Bailey Sternadel and Hollis Holbert, also of Henrietta. Friday night, Bryce Sikes took first place, followed by Maddie Brown of Henrietta in second and Hunter Baker of Petrolia in third.

Riding club winners were announced Thursday night. In first place was the Red River Riding Club, followed by the Jack County Sheriff’s Posse in second and the Clay County 4-H in third.

Mike Coker of Midway won Thursday night’s drawing for a pair of boots from the Montague Boot Company. Betty Ellesworth won a pair of boots from Waggoner’s Boot Center on Friday. No drawing was held Saturday night.

Results of the remaining events are as follows:

Bareback – First place, Stetson Cravens, Eufala, Okla., 75 points; second place (tie), Zane Caddell, LaGrange, and Cassidy Keaton, Wharton, 72.

Saddle Bronc – First place, Jeremy Melancon, Buffalo, 76 points; second, Ty Kirkland, Vernon, 74; third, Cody Goertzen, Vernon, 70.

Bull Riding – First place, Stormy Maxey, Mansfield, Okla., 76; second, Zachary Miles, Huntsville, 74; third, Cody Rostocky, Waxahachie, 72.

Tie Down Roping – First place, Chase Williams, Stephenville, 8.72 seconds; second, Jim Locke, Miami, Texas, 9.24 seconds; third, Bradley Bynum, Sterling City, 9.49 seconds; fourth, Kelsey Garrison, Channing, 9.5 seconds; fifth, Chris DeMasses, Boyd, 9.58 seconds; sixth, Ryan Thibodeaux, Stephenville, 9.76 seconds.

Steer Wrestling – First place, Dean Stermer, Wichita Falls, 5.5 seconds; second, Tyler Gibson, Huntsville, 5.6 seconds; third, Manty Eakin, Benbrook, 5.8 seconds; fourth, Ryan Fromme, Nemo, 5.9 seconds.

Breakaway Roping – First place, Kaki Herring, Huntsville, 2.53 seconds; second place, Tori Mullins, Duncan, Okla., 2.96 seconds; third, Ashley Guest, Gladewater, 3.13 seconds; fourth, McKenzie Blanks, Celina, 3.23 seconds; fifth, Randus London, Freedom, Okla., 3.26 seconds.

Barrel Racing – First place, Randus London, Freedom, Okla., 16.898 seconds; second, Caitlyn Cummings, Hobbs, N.M., 16.978 seconds; third, Jean Winters, Texline, 17.050 seconds; fourth Kelly Garrison, Channing, 17.054 seconds; fifth, Martha Wright, Dublin, 17.060 seconds.
